Creative Nonfiction Essay Contest

Historical Writers of America is proud to announce their first annual creative nonfiction (historical nonfiction) contest beginning May 15, 2019. The HWA competition is dedicated to supporting the efforts and talent of writers of historical nonfiction.

Prizes and Publication:

The first place winner will receive $500 and publication of his or her winning essay in a future publication of HWA. The second place winner will receive $250 and publication, and third-place winner will receive $100 and publication. Honorable mentions will also be awarded to entrants whose work reached the final round of judging, and may be selected for publication. Historical Writers of America (HWA) is a membership organization whose mission is to celebrate, support and connect ALL historical writers: fiction or non-fiction, whether they are writing books or writing for the screen (movies or tv), the stage, magazines, or online blogs. HWA’s focus is on the historical writer - in all genres. If your setting is at least 50 years in the past, it's considered historical. HWA welcomes traditionally published or self-published authors as well as those aspiring to be published to join as general members.

Eligibility requirements for our first annual (2019) competition are as follows:

What to submit: Essays must be original unpublished creative nonfiction, typed and double-spaced, and may not exceed 3,000 words in length. There are no theme restrictions, other than a historical time period be evident. Copyright remains the property of the author. There is no limit to the number of submissions, nor any restriction from submitting to both fiction and nonfiction contests offered by HWA.

Who may submit: The competition is open to all U.S. and international writers writing in the English language. Previously published work is ineligible.

Submission requirements: Submissions are submitted online through Submittable.  Writers may submit multiple entries, but each must be accompanied by a separate entry fee, We do accept simultaneous submissions; however, the writer must notify us if an essay is accepted for publication or wins an award or places in any way in another competition (i.e. receives an Honorable Mention, is a semi-finalist, etc.) prior to our September announcements. No entry confirmation will be given unless requested. The author’s name should not appear on the essay. Our entrants are judged anonymously. Each essay must be in separate submission; single submissions with multiple file uploads will disqualify all attachments. All submissions require complete information — with the writer’s name, complete mailing address, e-mail address, phone number, the title of the piece, and the word count. Manuscripts will not be returned.
